IJ Canon PIXMA MG5380 Set Up Drivers, Software, Manuals and Firmware– The Canon Pixma MG5380 wireless inkjet all-in-one ($ 149.99) provides a decent set of features for the all-in-one printer (MFP) at a modest price. It provides good photo quality, allows you to print (or scan) multiple fonts and offers enough paper capacity for the dual work at home and in the home office.

The MG5380 can print, copy and scan. You can scan as an attachment to an email; to a PC; to a USB flash drive or to a memory card. It uses 5 ink tanks, including one black pigment. One of the strengths of the MG5380 is that it can print directly from a variety of media sources, using its 3.0-inch LCD screen for viewing images. It has a port for a USB stick or a PictBridge-compatible camera, and your card reader supports several formats in the SD and Memory Stick families.

The MG5380 is a beautiful, shiny black machine with rounded corners, measuring 8.9 by 21.4 by 18.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 18.3 pounds. It has a 150-sheet main paper tray and a 150-sheet multipurpose tray for a total paper capacity of 300 sheets, plus an integrated automatic duplexer. The MG5380 offers USB and WiFi connectivity; I tested it over a USB connection with a PC running Windows Vista.
This model includes a new feature in Canon’s repertoire: the ability to print on printable optical discs or CD, DVD or Blu-ray boxes. The printer comes with a disc tray and a program in the software package allows you to define the text and images and offers a variety of layout templates.

A new addition to Canon’s software suite is a set of software-based photo filters that can introduce a fish-eye, toy camera, soft focus or blurry background effect. The Full HD Movie Print program has been updated with improvements, including the ability to print a combined image from a series of frames to capture motion.

This MFP also provides access to the Pixma Cloud Link, which allows you to print photos from Canon Image Gateway and Picasa online photo albums as well as templates, including seasonal stationary and calendars, all without a computer.

Print speed and output quality
Canon Pixma MG5380 has printed the latest version of our business application suite (as programmed by QualityLogic hardware and software at a speed of 3.0 pages per minute (ppm), a typical speed for an inkjet MFP Kodak ESP Office 2170 Multifunction Printer ($ 149.99, 4 stars) at 3.0 ppm, while the HP Photosmart Plus all-in-one ($ 149.00, 4 stars) printed the same 3.2 ppm The choice of Epson Stylus NX625 ($ 149, 4 stars) went through the same tests at 4 ppm.

The text quality was average for an inkjet MFP, good enough for any use except those that require very small fonts. Graphic quality was slightly below average. One problem that occurred to me is that the graphics tended to blur if handled right after printing. The colors looked dull in various illustrations. The MG5380 was worse than normal when printing very fine white and colored lines (a tricky proposition for most printers). Soft dithering was evident in some images. The graphics were good enough for internal commercial use and perhaps for PowerPoint handouts if you are careful to ensure that fine lines are displayed.

Photo prints were above average, with most prints moving to true photo quality. A monochromatic image showed a slight tone, and there was some posterization (sudden changes in brightness where they should be gradual).

The cost claimed per page printed from Canon for the MG5380 is 5.2 cents per page monochrome and 13.4 cents per page color, which are relatively high. For example, HP claims 4.2 cents per monochrome and 11.4 cents per color page for Photosmart Plus, while Kodak – which has low ink costs as an attraction – claims 3.7 cents per monochrome and 11.2 cents per page in color. penny or two differences per page may not look like much, but they add up quickly, especially if you need the printer to do more than light work.

The MG5380 has a lot to offer as a home (or dual purpose MFP for home and home office) – very good photo quality, ability to print from multiple sources and store more than one type of paper at a time. The HP Photosmart Plus also deserves to be regarded as an MFP primarily for home use.
