There have been some significant developments in office printing technology in recent years, but as we reported recently, the traditional business model for office printing is changing, reflecting an increasing focus on operating costs and environmental sustainability.
Epson started this trend a few years ago, with its EcoTank range of printers. This printer no longer uses expensive ink cartridges, replacing them with large internal ink tanks. This new design shows that the initial purchase price of EcoTank printers is higher than conventional inkjets. However, the built-in ink tanks can be easily refilled using recyclable low-cost ink bottles, drastically reducing operating costs and total cost of ownership (TCO) over the life of the printer. And now Canon has joined the ‘low-TCO’ group with its own MegaTank printer range.
Pricing & options
There are several models in Canon’s MegaTank range, starting with the Pixma G1510, which cost £ 132.50 (ie VAT; VAT includes £ 159 or $ 179.99) and are designed as affordable home printers. Two top-of-the-range models – Pixma G6050 and G6050 – are aimed at small businesses, home offices, and retailers who need a reliable printer for everyday use.
The Pixma G6050, reviewed here, is a single function color inkjet printer, priced at £ 191.65 (eg VAT; £ 229.99 incl VAT), while the G6050 is a multi-functional alternative, equipped with a scanner / copier unit, which costs £ 249.99 (eg VAT; £ 299.99 including VAT). And, for offices that only need black-and-white printing of letters and other text-based documents, there’s a mono model called the GM2050 – although, somewhat oddly, it costs the same as the four-color G6050 (and doesn’t support Mac, as other models do in this range).
Options for US customers are more limited, with a smaller range of MegaTank printers currently available for pre-order. The MegaTank printers also appear to have different model numbers in the US, with the G5020 and G6020 providing similar features for UK printers, and priced at $ 250 and $ 300, respectively.
Features & design
The need to accommodate a large internal ink tank means the G6050 is somewhat larger than a conventional inkjet printer.
The initial setup process is also a little more complicated than simply inserting a set of cartridges into a traditional inkjet printer, as you’ll have to hand pour all four ink bottles into the respective tanks located on the right and left side of the printer. Fortunately, Canon has designed a bottle with a small nozzle that fits into the inlet valve of each tank, reducing the risk of spills. However, you may still feel safer with old newspapers sitting on the table, just in case.
In addition to the refillable ink tanks, the G6050 is a conventional inkjet printer, although it has a range of features useful for office use. It provides 4800-by-1200dpi resolution for printing, with USB and wi-fi connectivity, as well as Ethernet for wired office networks. The main paper tray holds 250 sheets of A4 paper on the front, while the back tray holds another 100 sheets of A4 paper, or other types of paper such as photo paper or glossy envelopes, so you can choose a different media while still sitting. on your table. The printer supports automatic two-sided (duplex) printing, with AirPrint for Apple’s iOS devices, Google Cloud print, and the Canon PRINT app for Android. An obvious omission is a scanner / copier although, as mentioned,
Operating costs
The initial purchase price of £ 230 (VAT included) is relatively high for an inkjet printer but, of course, Canon claims that the refillable MegaTank range design offers significantly lower operating costs.
Like Epson, Canon includes a set of bottled ink with its refill printer, with the G6050 including three black bottles that will produce 18,000 pages for mono printing. There’s also a set of color inks – a bottle each for cyan, magenta and yellow – for the roughly 7,700 pages of color documents. The result is less than 1p per page when using the initial ink set, which is very cost effective even for traditional mono printing.
It could easily cost hundreds of pounds to print that many pages when using conventional ink cartridges, so the G6050 is sure to get the money if you need a printer for regular everyday use.
Oddly, Canon is shy about the cost of replacement ink, which doesn’t help, considering it’s the USP for the entire MegaTank range. However, the cost of ink from third party retailers suggests that a black ink bottle will cost around £ 10.40 (eg VAT; £ 12.50 incl VAT), while three CMY inks cost £ 7.16 (eg VAT; £ 8) , 49 including VAT) each.
It works out at 0.2p per page for mono printing, and 0.4p per page for color – similar to the operating costs of an Epson EcoTank printer, and considerably cheaper than using conventional ink cartridges.
Quality & performance
Those running costs are certainly attractive, though, like Epson’s early EcoTank models, the Canon MegaTank printer offers relatively modest print speeds. Canon quotes speeds of 13 ‘ipm’ for mono printing (refers to ‘images per minute’, not pages per minute or ppm) and 6.8ipm for color printing. Mono printing is proving to be quite respectable, with a choice of text-only PDF and Word documents hitting speeds of 12ppm, which should be sufficient for most small offices. However, documents that combine text and color graphics drop to a simpler 4.5ppm. And while Canon cites a speed of just 37 seconds for a 10-by-15cm (postcard) photo print, our test photo took a slightly more relaxed 90 seconds.
However, we can’t fault the G6050’s print quality. Canon’s pigment-based black ink delivers sharp, smooth text that can make laser printers money-making. Color graphics are good too, and while photo printing is relatively slow, our test photos were bright and detailed, so the G6050 can definitely turn its attention to presentation or marketing materials when needed.
Conclusion
The supplied ink can last for several years in many small offices before you need to purchase your first replacement kit. The G6050 also provides excellent quality text, graphics and photo output, although the relatively low color printing speed means it won’t be ideal for busy offices that require a lot of color printing. However, if you work in a small office or retail location that requires a workhorse printer especially for text-based documents, the G6050 will immediately benefit.
