Canon PIXMA TR4500 Drivers Download– The Canon Pixma TR4500 is an entry-level all-in-one (AIO) inkjet printer with wireless connectivity and support for Amazon’s Alexa. This lightweight printer is best suited for home use and has an appropriate price tag. It has some nice features, such as automatic two-sided printing, and the print quality is slightly better than I would normally expect from a budget all-in-one.
I installed the Pixma TR4500 in my home office for five hours of intensive testing and about five days of general use. I tested things like print speed and quality, photo print quality, scanning and copying capabilities, and ease of use. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall performance of such an affordable printer, but not enough to recommend it for anything but light home use.
Design
The Pixma TR4500 doesn’t look dated overall, but the interface and controls do. When many entry-level and mid-range inkjet printers have moved on to large, colorful screens, the Pixma TR4500 has a small LCD screen and a large assortment of physical buttons. The display is very thin and a little hard to read if you don’t look at it from the right angle, but the large buttons are easy to spot, making the printer fairly user-friendly.
The display and control panel are on the printer’s top, making it easier to use when standing and looking down. Try using it while sitting in front of the printer, and you will struggle to read the screen due to the viewing mentioned above angle issues.
To the right of the display and control panel is a flip-up panel that hides the automatic document feeder (ADF). Underneath is a cut-out pocket that stores documents after passing through the ADF.
The control panel and ADF flip up, so clearing jams is a breeze. Flipping up the ADF also reveals a standard flatbed scanner if you need to scan a single document or if you need to scan something that is irregularly sized or too thick to pass through the ADF.
The front of the printer flips open to reveal the paper cartridge and telescoping platform designed to accommodate documents as they print. The paper cassette is conveniently attached to the front cover.
Further access to the interior is available by flipping down a panel behind the main cover. This allows you to install the two ink cartridges and access the paper in case of a jam.
The back of the printer includes the power cord connector, Ethernet port, USB port, and an attached telephone jack if you want to use the machine’s fax capabilities. There is also a quick release to remove a panel for additional access to paper jams.
Installation process: Theoretically simple, but I ran into problems
Setting up the Pixma TR4500 should be quite easy. It starts by firmly inserting the two ink cartridges, one color and one black, and then closing the front of the device. You can then set up the printer using the Canon PRINT app.
It should all be pretty quick and easy, but I ran into an issue where the paper of different sizes jammed and caused error codes during the installation process. This is the same paper I use for all my printer tests, and I’ve never had a printer eat so many sheets.
Once the printer settled down and stopped eating my paper, the process was fairly painless. I managed to set everything up and connect to Wi-Fi via the Canon app on my phone, after which I was able to start printing.
Print Quality
The PIXMA TR4500 performs very well in print quality, producing results that would be perfectly acceptable in a more professional office environment if various constraints do not preclude that type of use. The text was sharp and clear when printing black and white text documents, even when printing rather small fonts.
Mixed text and graphics turned out pretty well, too, including color graphics, especially considering this is an entry-level all-in-one. The color rendering was faded on regular paper, but it did quite well with gradients and fine lines.
Despite its low price and reliance on a single-color ink cartridge, the PIXMA TR4500 produces some surprisingly high-quality photo prints. I printed various photos in 4×6-inch and 8×10-inch, which were uniformly vibrant and colorful, with beautifully saturated colors and well-executed fine detail. Not at the level of a good photo printer, but quite good for an all-in-one in this price range.
The TR4500 is a cut above what I’ve come to expect from a photo printer in this price range, although the ink costs are high enough that you probably don’t want to use this device as your primary photo printer.
Print speed
While the PIXMA TR4500 produces surprisingly high-quality prints, they come out painfully slow. I timed it at less than nine pages per minute (ppm) for black and white text, which is significantly slower than other printers I’ve tested in this range, most of which print over 11 ppm.
Color pages come out even slower, with the PIXMA TR4500 printing less than five color pages per minute.
The PIXMA TR4500 does slightly better when printing color photos. I timed it on average to just under a minute to print my 4×6-inch test photos. That doesn’t make it much of a speed demon, but it’s not on par with other printers I’ve tested in this range.
Scan and copy quality
The PIXMA TR4500 makes decent copies of black and white documents, with text that is clear enough to read and good graphics reproduction. Color copying is less impressive and slow but more acceptable for such an affordable printer.
Operating costs
While the PIXMA TR4500 is well priced and delivers better quality than I expected, the running costs of using this printer are too high for occasional home use.
The standard black cartridge has a suggested retail price of $18, while the tri-color cartridge has a suggested retail price of $23, and they both have a face value of 180 pages. The XL cartridges cost $26 and $30 each and have 300 pages each.
In my experience, these Canon cartridges don’t last as long as the page rating. But even if they did, you’d have to pay $0.08 per page for black and white and more for color pages. That’s fine for finishing a document or photo here or there, but it will add up quickly in any medium to high volume printing environment.
Connectivity
Aside from running costs, connectivity options are the only area where the PIXMA TR4500 lives up to its low price tag. It has Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity as standard, and you can print wired or wirelessly from your computer or via the Canon PRINT app, but there’s no Wi-Fi Direct or NFC connectivity here.
This printer also has an old USB 2.0 Type B connector instead of the fast USB 3.0 Type-A ports seen in many of the competition. And that’s all you get. Understandably, the connectivity options are a bit light due to the overall low price of this device, but it’s still a weak point.
Paper handling
The Pixma TR4500 has a single 100-sheet tray that you can configure for different paper sizes, including photo paper. The capacity should be enough if you’re using this as a home printer that can only handle an occasional print job. Still, it’s small enough that I’d find it frustrating to use it in my home office for an extended period.
Other printers I’ve tested in this price range, such as the Epson WF2760, typically hold around 150 sheets, and printers designed for more extensive use often come with two trays or a secondary paper feeder.
Price
With a suggested retail price of $100, the Pixma TR4500 is priced to sell. It’s priced slightly lower than competitors with similar capabilities, reflected in things like the small paper tray and lack of individual color ink cartridges.
The street price of the Pixma TR4500 is usually much lower, with Canon offering the printer for just $50 through its direct point of sale. This is a fantastic light-duty home printer at that price, and you’re unlikely to find a better option at a lower price.
Canon PIXMA TR4500 vs. Epson WF2760
At a suggested retail price of $130, the Epson WF2760 (see on Amazon) is slightly more expensive than the PIXMA TR4500. They are both inkjet all-in-one printers with similar capabilities and are both designed for fairly light use.
The Epson WF2760 has three different color ink cartridges compared to the single color cartridge of the PIXMA TR4500. While the PIXMA is quite good at printing photos, the Epson is generally cheaper to run as it only needs to replace each cartridge when the ink runs out.
The Epson is also a faster printer, offers a wider range of wireless connectivity options, and has a larger paper tray.
While the Epson is a slightly better printer in numbers, the PIXMA TR4500’s regular retail price of just $49.99 makes it the more attractive choice for light home use. For the money, the slightly better performance of the Epson isn’t enough to tip the balance.
If you need a printer better suited to a home office or even a small office environment, the PIXMA TR4500 or the Epson WF2760 probably won’t do the trick. For that, you’ll need to make some room in the budget for something like the Canon PIXMA G6020, which has a street price closer to $249.99.
